hahahaha!

I don't really mean to laff

I WIN THE INTERNETS!!!!!

You should be fine with the 780 chipset... nvidia has unified their drivers so it swaps over rather well. I haven't had an issue with chipset drivers since before the geforce 4 chipsets.

knew you would like that news...she worked good for 3+yrs though. then it finally had enough and burned itself up lol.

so now its off to the next step up in mobo's before having to change fucking everything. $70 swap is a lot cheaper than buying a new proc, new ram, and new board all together...especially when my proc in benchmarks matches and even exceeds the core i7 920.

granted vid cards I could sell my 3 and get 1 new one, but whats the fun in that?!!! 3 looks cooler and im too lazy to sell mine...

besides I can build 3 htpc's with them when I finally decide to upgrade...each individually will handle bluray's no sweat.

Seriously, stop talking about how you should keep your 3 video cards. Fuck em. Get one nice new one, ATI.

I almost forgot how much you hate the 680i chippy.. I NEVER had ANY probs with mine.. I had the XFX 680i LT mobo and flashed it t oa full 680i BIOS.. it was so sweet.. I even watercooled it in that "Titan Robella" watercase I had for a while.. Never a single prob with my Q67.

But you are definately more of an experienced enthusiast than I.. I am merely a reader and contemplater of such things.. never had the funds to throw at a nice board and proc that i was gonna mutilate haha!

780i up and running

had to boot into safe mode, add windows installer into the registry manually for safe mode, then uninstall the chipset drivers and reinstall them. then booted normal and it worked fine after that. no windows reinstall after mobo swap.

thats about the most dramatic hardware change I've done so far without a reinstall. I've done raid-0 to single hdd swap with no reinstall (driveimage xml) and I've changed proc and memory out with no reinstall.

now somebody has to try intel to amd or amd to intel lol. see if you can get it to work without reinstalling windows...I might try core2extreme to core i7 in the future and see if that will survive no reinstall. if intel to amd is possible then that should also be possible.

I did this swap a while back and even made a video of the process I used. It's kinda hard. You have to use command line to manually delete some system files referring to the processors and do a repair install of windows. I cloned a bunch of older Intel laptops over to AMD and vice-versa using DriveImg XML for a while.

ok guess the real question is, anyone done it with vista ultimate x64? (or any vista version)

I've noticed vista's repair tool is less useful than xp's...safe mode with networking was more helpful than anything so I could at least look up how to do things online using the computer I was working on
